In 2001, we were successful in our bid to provide a multifaceted soft service contract at Rugeley Power Station, a contract that we still operate and currently runs until December 2016, a period of 15 years. During the life of the contract, we have been tasked to make substantial reductions in contract costs without compromising our standard of service provision and we have also been through two periods of major restructuring in 2008 and 2014.
What we did
In 2008 we looked at both the security and cleaning elements of the contract. Within the security element, we reduced the number of contracted hours per week by fine- tuning the responsibilities of the security officers and expanding their remit to encompass induction and visitor reception duties. This gave Rugeley a reduction in their direct labour cost. In addition we looked at the cleaning function and revised the programme of works, introduced labour saving machinery and incorporated deep clean works within the scope of daily routines to reduce the cost to Rugeley.
In 2014 we were again met with financial challenges in line with Rugeley’s requirement to provide cost efficient savings. We achieved this by taking many previously sub-contracted services in house and by reducing paper product consumption and other costs on site.
The above initiatives have resulted in savings of over 10% of the original contract value and cemented a true partnership with the client on site. As a result, in 2011, we were invited to tender for and were successful in a total FM contract, the scope of which is to provide both Hard and Soft FM, covering a broad spectrum of non-core services supporting Rugeley’s primary function as an energy generation provider. Rugeley Power Station is now part of GDF Suez.
